Introducing the Sinai Health System

Mount Sinai Hospital, Bridgepoint Active Healthcare, the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute and Circle of Care are coming together to create a premier exemplar of an integrated health system that provides better, more co-ordinated care for our patients. The Sinai Health System will combine acute care, complex and rehabilitative care, primary care, home care and other community-based services fueled by world-class research to create a seamless continuum of care, from healthy beginnings to healthy aging.

Sinai Health System is being led by Joseph Mapa, President and CEO. Marian Walsh is serving as Associate CEO and Chief Transformation Officer, Jay Hennick is Chair of the Board and David Denison is Vice-Chair. Michael Scheinert will continue as President and CEO of Circle of Care, connected to the Sinai Health System through an integrated governance and management model.

We connected with Joseph Mapa and Marian Walsh to talk about their vision for the system and what it will mean for patients across our city and our province.

Q. What brought these leading healthcare organizations together?

Joseph Mapa: Bridgepoint, Mount Sinai and Circle of Care share deeply rooted values and an unwavering commitment to quality and excellent care for patients who depend on us. We are excited by the opportunity to leverage our combined strengths to do even more for our patients.

Q. How will this integrated system help patients?

Marian Walsh: Healthcare is changing because our patients are changing — particularly because of the increase in chronic, complex conditions such as diabetes, cancer, arthritis. Many of the greatest challenges for this patient population come at the points of transition and co-ordinating care through different providers. Sinai Health System combines three different care settings together under one system and by doing so, will build models of care to help patients transition seamlessly between different care settings.

Q. How will research drive new models of care in the system?

Joseph Mapa: By integrating the Bridgepoint Collaboratory for Research and Innovation as a new research pillar within the LTRI, Sinai Health System will accelerate the research necessary to improve models of care for patients with the greatest healthcare needs. This pillar adds an exciting dimension to our already world-class research as we begin to look more closely at best practices in policy development and health systems innovation that aligns with many of our clinical areas.

Q. How important is philanthropy to the Sinai Health System?

Joseph Mapa: Philanthropy is vital to the delivery of quality healthcare. We are so thankful to our community of supporters and they will continue to play a vital role in the success of the Sinai Health System.

Marian Walsh: Whether donors have supported Mount Sinai, Bridgepoint, Circle of Care or LTRI, they can continue to expect that their gifts will be used as they intended, and with great impact and appreciation. I think both our organizations have a long history of community support and we are so grateful those communities stand beside us as we build for the future.
